Renowned Bangladeshi photographer and journalist Shahidul Alam paid his last tribute to eminent academic and writer Syed Manzoorul Islam shortly after returning home from Israeli detention on Saturday (October 11).

Alam visited the Central Shaheed Minar around noon to pay his respects to the late scholar, reminiscing about his life and work. He was among a stream of dignitaries who came to pay their respects despite persistent rain.

Others who laid wreaths included Asif Nazrul, legal adviser to the interim government; Syeda Rizwana Hasan, adviser to the ministries of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and Water Resources; and several prominent public figures.

Syed Manzoorul Islam, an emeritus professor of English at the University of Dhaka and a celebrated novelist and essayist, died on Friday at 5pm while undergoing treatment at Labaid Hospital in the capital.
