Barcelona’s impressive run finally came to an end as they suffered a 2–1 defeat against 10-man Real Sociedad on Sunday night. After winning 11 consecutive matches, the loss reduced the gap with second-placed Real Madrid to just one point.

Under new coach Pellegrino Matarazzo, Sociedad showed intent from the opening moments. An early goal by Mikel Oyarzabal was ruled out for offside, while Barcelona saw Fermín López’s long-range effort disallowed due to a foul. Lamine Yamal caused repeated trouble down the right flank but failed to score. Eventually, Oyarzabal broke the deadlock with a brilliant volley from a Gonzalo Guedes cross.

Barcelona pushed hard for an equaliser in the second half. Despite several fine saves by Sociedad’s goalkeeper, Marcus Rashford restored parity in the 70th minute with a header from Yamal’s cross. However, the joy was short-lived as Guedes struck again just a minute later to put the hosts back in front.

Late in the match, Sociedad were reduced to ten men after Carlos Soler received a red card. Barcelona applied pressure until the final whistle, but luck deserted them once more as Rashford’s stoppage-time corner hit the post.

After the match, head coach Hansi Flick praised his team’s performance but admitted luck was not on their side, saying there are days when defeats come without a clear explanation.
