A motorcyclist quickly sped away after taping a ‘mysterious’ white envelope onto the moving bulletproof car of BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman. Even after five days since the incident, which took place last Wednesday, police have not been able to identify the motorcyclist.

On Monday (19 January), Rakibul Islam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Gulshan Police Station under the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), told the media that no formal complaint had been filed by the BNP regarding the incident. They were only informed verbally.

The OC said, “We have filed a general diary (GD) on our own initiative. We are collecting and analyzing CCTV footage from the scene. However, as the visuals are not clear, we have not been able to identify the motorcycle or the rider. Still, we are continuing our efforts.”

When asked what was inside the envelope, the police official said, “The envelope was not handed over to us. However, those responsible for BNP and Tarique Rahman’s security have informed us that there was no note or letter inside the envelope. It was empty—there was nothing inside. The empty envelope was taped onto the car. We are investigating the purpose behind this act.”

CCTV footage shows that at 11:41 pm on Wednesday (14 January), on Road No. 65 in Gulshan of the capital, a person riding a white Hero Hunk motorcycle suddenly taped an envelope onto the body of Tarique Rahman’s moving car and quickly headed toward the American Club. Tarique Rahman was inside the car at the time. However, the Chairperson Security Force (CSF), which was responsible for the security of Tarique Rahman’s motorcade, did not react at that moment.
