A court has ordered the seizure of land worth Tk 17.5 million owned by Jahangir Alam, the former personal assistant of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. At the same time, the court has ordered the freezing of Tk 10.3 million held in seven bank accounts belonging to his wife, Kamrun Nahar. The order was issued today, Tuesday, by Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md. Sabbir Faez following an application filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). The information was confirmed by the court’s bench assistant, Md. Riaz Hossain.
On the same day, ACC Assistant Director Piyas Pal submitted two separate applications to the court. The applications stated that there is a possibility that Jahangir Alam may transfer, dispose of, execute deeds for, or otherwise change ownership of his acquired immovable properties. In the interest of a fair investigation, it is necessary to seize these immovable assets.
The applications also noted that there is a possibility of transferring, disposing of, executing deeds for, or otherwise changing ownership of the movable assets acquired in the name of Kamrun Nahar, including the balances held in bank accounts. Therefore, in the interest of a proper investigation, it is necessary to freeze these movable assets. After hearing the applications, the court granted both requests.
Earlier, on 17 December last year, the ACC filed a case against Jahangir Alam and his wife Kamrun Nahar. According to the allegations, Kamrun Nahar committed punishable offenses under Section 27(1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004, and Section 109 of the Penal Code for acquiring assets worth Tk 68,048,642 beyond known sources of income.
