NCP Alleges Attack on Patwari Carried Out on Abbas’s Orders with Tarique Rahman’s Consent

The National Citizen Party (NCP) has alleged that the attack on its Dhaka-8 candidate Nasiruddin Patwari was carried out on the instructions of BNP Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas with the consent of BNP Chairperson Tarique Rahman.

At a press conference in Dhaka on Tuesday, NCP Convener Nahid Islam said the incident, which involved egg-throwing at Patwari inside Habibullah Bahar University College, was a planned attempt to intimidate a rival candidate.

Nahid questioned BNP’s commitment to democratic politics, stating that resorting to violence mirrored tactics previously used by the Awami League. He warned that post-uprising Bangladesh would not tolerate political violence.

Issuing a warning, Nahid said if authorities remain silent, the party would respond politically with public support. “We do not want a hostile election environment, but responsibility will lie with the Election Commission and law enforcement if violence continues,” he said.

Patwari also demanded disciplinary action against Mirza Abbas, alleging involvement of student wing activists in the attack. NCP leaders urged immediate action by the Election Commission, college authorities and BNP, stating that the final response would come through the ballot on February 12.
