Govt to Announce New Fuel Prices Today; Adequate Reserves Ensure No Crisis in April

The government is set to announce a fresh price adjustment for fuel oils today, Tuesday (March 31), following an analysis of the current market situation. Monir Hossain Chowdhury, spokesperson for the Energy and Mineral Resources Division, confirmed the decision during a press briefing held at the Secretariat on Monday.

Addressing concerns over potential shortages, the spokesperson assured that the country has sufficient fuel reserves. As of March 30, the government stock holds 133,000 metric tons of diesel. Furthermore, the procurement process for an additional 150,000 metric tons of diesel, scheduled for arrival in April, has already been completed. Consequently, there is no risk of a fuel crisis in the coming month.

According to data from the Energy Division, diesel accounts for approximately 63% of the country's total fuel demand. Given its extensive use in agricultural irrigation and public transport, maintaining a stable supply and affordable price for diesel remains a top priority for the administration.

The spokesperson also noted that the demand for octane and petrol is significantly lower than that of diesel, making the overall management of petroleum products more efficient. As the government finalizes the new price chart today, industry experts expect the decision to prioritize the sustainability of the agricultural sector during the ongoing irrigation season and keep public transport fares within reach of the general public.
