The High Court today stayed an existing decision debarring student politics on Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) campus.

A High Court division bench comprising Justice Md Khasruzzaman and Justice KM Zahid Sarwar passed the order responding to a writ petition seeking the stay by a BUET student.

The bench simultaneously issued a rule asking for explanations by the education ministry and the BUET why the ban on student politics on the premier engineering university should not be declared illegal.

BUET student and Chhatra League leader Imtiaz Rabbi filed the writ petition after BUET authorities scrapped his dormitory accommodation on charges of violating the ban and against the backdrop of protests by a group of students opposed to the campus politics in BUET.

Recently, the students held a protest with several demands, as some Chhatra League leaders visited the campus on Thursday night ignoring the ban.
