An investigation has been initiated against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and nine others on charges of genocide, murder and crimes against humanity during the anti-quota student movement that took place between July 15 and August 5.

The investigation is being conducted by the International Crimes Tribunal's investigation agency.

The complainant’s lawyer, Gazi MH Tamim, confirmed the development on Thursday (August 15).

According to him, the investigation began late Wednesday (August 14) night.

The charges were brought to the International Crimes Tribunal on Wednesday by Md Bulbul Kabir, the father of Arif Ahmed Siam, who was killed during the quota reform movement.

On behalf of Kabir, Advocate Gazi MH Tamim submitted the formal application to the Chief Coordinator of the investigation agency earlier that day.

The complaint also implicates the Bangladesh Awami League, its youth wing Awami Jubo League, and its student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League, urging that they be held accountable for the alleged crimes.

The investigation marks a significant turn in the legal battles surrounding the violent crackdown on the anti-quota movement, which has been a contentious issue in Bangladesh’s political landscape.

As the investigation proceeds, the country is likely to witness intense legal and political scrutiny, with potential implications for the accused and the nation’s governance.
