Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashir Uddin said 37 lakh cardholders are fake among the one crore family cardholders of Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB).

He revealed the information while speaking at a view-exchange meeting of the committee for the "White Paper” on the state of Bangladesh's economy in the capital’s Agargaon on Saturday (18 January).

It organised the symposium titled “White Paper and Thereafter: Economic Management, Reforms, and National Budget.”

The commerce adviser said the mass upsurge happened due to the creation of discrimination in society. Removal of this discrimination is possible through changing policy.

Speaking about the tax, Bashir Uddin said direct and indirect taxes both are important. The most important is to implement it.

Mentioning that banks made a profit in December last unethically despite economic turmoil, the adviser said these profits should be investigated.

The white paper committee chairman and Distinguished Fellow at the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya criticized the decision of increasing VAT.
