The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court today (April 23) scrapped the framing of charges and all proceedings in a money laundering case filed against Chief Advisor Dr Muhammad Yunus, Chairman of Grameen Telecom, and six officials of the company.

A bench led by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed delivered the unanimous verdict in the morning, allowing an appeal filed by Dr Yunus that challenged a previous order from the High Court.

Attorney General AM Amin Uddin represented the state, while Yunus was defended by Barrister Abdullah Al Mamun.

Advocate Asif Hossain appeared on behalf of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

The case was originally filed on 30 May 2023 by ACC Deputy Director Gulshan Anwar Pradhan under the Money Laundering Prevention Act.

Yunus and 13 others were accused of misappropriating Tk25.22 crore from the Workers’ Profit Participation Fund and allegedly transferring the funds illegally.

Following the conclusion of hearings on March 19, the Appellate Division had fixed April 23 for the delivery of its verdict, ultimately bringing a close to a case that had drawn significant public attention.
