Jamaat Engages in Talks with National Consensus Commission

Jamaat-e-Islami joined a dialogue session with the National Consensus Commission on Saturday (April 26) to discuss national reforms. The party's delegation entered the LD Hall at the National Parliament building around 10:30 am.

Naib-e-Ameer Dr Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher leads the Jamaat delegation.

Other members of the 10-member team include Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar, Assistant Secretary General Rafiqul Islam Khan, Dr Hamidur Rahman Azad, Advocate Ehsanul Mahbub Zubair, Central Executive Committee members Saiful Alam Khan Milon and Advocate Matiur Rahman Akand, who also serves as the Secretary of the Central Publicity and Media Department.

Opening the session, the Vice President of the Consensus Commission, Professor Ali Riaz, emphasised the importance of remaining vigilant so that the opportunity for state reforms is not lost. He noted that the responsibility of reforming the state rests not only with the government but with all citizens.

Speaking on behalf of the Jamaat, Naib-e-Ameer Abdullah Mohammad Taher pointed out the widespread frustration among citizens regarding Bangladesh’s 54-year journey. He stressed that the new Bangladesh born from the mass uprising of 2024 must not fail. The nation, he said, yearns for a new beginning. He further expressed Jamaat's expectation for a free, fair, and transparent election and called for unity to achieve this goal.

The meeting was moderated by Monir Haider, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser. Other members of the Consensus Commission present included Safar Raj Hossain, Justice Emdadul Haque, Dr Badiul Alam Majumdar, Dr Iftekharuzzaman, and several others.

Earlier on March 20, Jamaat-e-Islami submitted a written proposal to the National Consensus Commission, calling for proportional representation in elections and the establishment of a bicameral parliament. They also offered recommendations concerning the constitution, public administration, judiciary, Election Commission, and other areas. Jamaat leaders indicated that they are willing to allow as much time as necessary for a truly neutral election process, rather than adhering to a strict timeline.

It is worth mentioning that the BNP has also held three rounds of meetings with the Consensus Commission recently regarding the reform agenda.
