The Election Commission (EC) has initiated legal proceedings against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina following a request from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for concealing asset details in her affidavit for the 9th National Parliamentary elections in 2008.

The decision was discussed during an unscheduled meeting of the full commission, led by Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin, at the EC’s Agargaon office in Dhaka on Saturday (May 24).

Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Masud confirmed that the EC received a letter from the ACC accusing Hasina of hiding information in her election affidavit.

“We have sought the opinion of our legal wing on this matter,” Masud told reporters.

“The legal department will provide its input within two to three days, after which necessary action will be taken,” he said.

No senior EC officials, including the secretary, attended the closed-door meeting, underscoring its sensitivity.

The ACC’s request marks a significant step in addressing allegations of financial misconduct against the ousted prime minister, who has faced mounting scrutiny since her departure from office.
