More research institutions need to be established to restore endangered fish species, and young people should be involved in these efforts, Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus said.

He made the remarks at the inauguration of National Fisheries Week on Monday (18 August) at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in Dhaka.

Yunus said that alongside meeting domestic demand, market expansion and product diversification through research and other initiatives are essential to increase fish exports. He called on all relevant parties—including government departments, private organizations, exporters, and importers—to collaborate in implementing these initiatives.

Noting that improper management has caused hundreds of traditional native fish species to gradually disappear, he highlighted the establishment of a Life Gene Bank at the Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute to help preserve them.

He added that fish supply a large portion of the country’s animal protein demand. Twelve lakh women and a significant part of the workforce are directly or indirectly engaged in the sector. He expressed hope that by harnessing its immense potential, many more young people will become successful entrepreneurs.

Yunus also emphasised the need to ensure that genuine fishermen do not suffer from economic inequality and stressed the importance of including them in social safety programs with special care.
