Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter on Wednesday (August 20) laid emphasis on identifying and protecting all waterbodies across the country aiming to conserve local fisheries resources, reports BSS.

"There are various species of fish in different waterbodies. The waterbodies should be identified to conserve and increase local fish species," she said while speaking as the chief guest at a seminar titled 'Importance of sanctuaries in sustainable fisheries management and future steps to be taken' at the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC) in the city.

Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI) organised the seminar.

Farida Akhter said that establishing and protecting sanctuaries is very important for fisheries production as the amount of open waterbodies is decreasing at an alarming rate day by day.

"There may have been less attention in policy-making here earlier. That is why we are giving importance to this sector. We must do whatever is necessary to build open waterbodies," he added.

Fisheries and Livestock Secretary (Routine Responsibilities) Md Tofazzel Hossain attended the seminar as the special guest while BFRI Director General Dr. Anuradha Bhadra presided over the event.

Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation (BFDC) Chairman Farah Shammi and Director General of Department of Fisheries Dr Md Abdur Rouf also spoke on the occasion.
