Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam has announced that 4,000 Assistant Sub-Inspectors (ASIs) will be recruited ahead of the 13th National Parliamentary Elections.

He told reporters on Wednesday (September 3), after a meeting with Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration Md. Mokhlesur Rahman at the Secretariat, that half of the ASIs will be recruited through promotions and the other half through direct recruitment.

“A total of 4,000 ASIs will be recruited — half through promotions and the other half through direct recruitment. We came to the Ministry of Public Administration today regarding this matter. Some amendments to the regulations were needed, and they are facilitating that. This has helped smooth the path for the recruitment process,” the IGP said.

When asked if the recruitment was linked to the upcoming election, he replied, “Yes. As you know, the Chief Adviser recently approved the policy for recruitment of several forces. We are now implementing that.”

Senior Secretary Mokhlesur Rahman said, “A police delegation visited us. Through a few amendments to police regulations, a major recruitment process is underway. To expedite the process, we held a meeting together. If we can issue the order today, recruitment for ASIs and other ongoing appointments will proceed quickly.”

He added, “These positions — including ASIs — were created through coordination among the Finance Ministry, Legislative Division, Ministry of Public Administration, and Ministry of Home Affairs. Some regulatory provisions related to recruitment have been amended. The police are the first force to be deployed in the election field, along with the Ansar. Recruitment and training in the police force are ongoing. Constables and slightly higher ranks are appointed by the Superintendent of Police. We are working to ensure that the force is ready before the election schedule is officially announced.”
